The competition was held over 3 consecutive days. The bronze qualifier was played at Newport Golf Club and the silver qualifier at St Pierre Golf Club on April 24th in very difficult conditions. The players had to cope with very cold winds, torrential rain and hailstones. Those who completed their rounds thoroughly deserved to qualify to play the knock out stages at St Pierre the following day. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t improve – there were short bursts of sunshine between heavy storms which saw the players fighting to remain dry.
At one point the County Captain Mary was considering suspending play but when asked, the players preferred to continue, rather than waiting for the storm to pass. Thanks to Sean and all the staff at St Pierre who worked so hard to keep the course open. Also, thanks to Mathew and the staff in the shop, who supported registration staff for the 3 days.
The rain held off for Friday afternoon’s finals with an all Newport battle in the Championship seeing Lauren Hillier narrowly defeating Jordan Ryan in an excellent exhibition of golf. The bronze final saw the young Sofia Benitez from Celtic Manor prove too good for Sara Goode from Pontnewydd.
The Championships saw 4 juniors in the match play knock out rounds which are encouraging for the future of lady’s golf in Monmouthshire.
Thank you to the clubs who hosted the events and to the volunteers who gave up their time to ball spot and referee, without them such events would not succeed.
